It does not matter how capable these students are when it comes to abstract concepts if they have weak immediacy, it will appear that they are weaker than they really are. So is it too late for these students? Absolutely not! The place to start is with remediation, with drills in those basic math skills that they somehow never picked up. WARNING! Your child (or student) will not like this! It involves a bit of grinding, and the work will seem to them too \"baby\" -- they will probably not want it spread around that they are back to working their multiplication tables. But is what they need! Free math worksheets are available on the internet, and it is these kind of repetitive drills that can help build the students math immediacy.
Engagement entails much more than rote repetition of a procedure. Math worksheets tend to present very similar problem types over and over, leading to mundane practice of disassociated skills. For students who understand the material and successfully complete an assignment, another worksheet becomes meaningless. On the other hand, for the students who dont understand the material, an alternative method of instruction is whats needed. Another worksheet simply adds to the students frustration, or worse, contributes to a belief that \"Ill never understand math.\" A cute image or a \"fill-in-the-blanks\" riddle does nothing to increase engagement or learning (and lets face it, those riddles are not funny!). Instead, teachers need to increase engagement by providing students with exercises in which they discover patterns and relationships, solve problems, or think creatively about math relationships.
Today when it comes to finding goal worksheets there are numerous places online where these can be found. You could always go for a basic set of worksheets many which are available for free, but may not actually help you focus and track your goals. Therefore if you really want to see the right kinds of results then selecting more comprehensive goal systems should be considered.
